Project overviewWhat this project is about.
The Machogo School WASH Project is a proposed intervention to improve access to safe water, dignified sanitation and handwashing facilities at a community school in Machogo Village, Sanda Loko Chiefdom, Karene District.
The school currently lacks a reliable safe-water source and adequate sanitation facilities. Pupils and community members depend on an unprotected stream that is also accessible to animals and exposed to leaves, soil and other forms of contamination.
CDEO’s field team visited the school and water source, interviewed community representatives and documented the existing conditions through photographs and video. Community members reported that the water becomes especially dirty during the dry season and expressed concerns about illnesses affecting children. These accounts describe local experiences and have not yet been confirmed through medical or laboratory testing.
The proposed project combines a borehole fitted with a manual hand pump, a six-cubicle sanitation facility and handwashing stations. The sanitation design will include three cubicles for girls, two for boys and one accessible cubicle for pupils and community members with disabilities.
Background
Machogo is a rural community in Sanda Loko Chiefdom where children attend a community school with limited water and sanitation infrastructure.
During CDEO’s field visit, the team walked with community representatives to the stream used as a water source. The team observed that the source was open and accessible to animals and exposed to falling leaves, soil and other environmental contamination. Interviews were conducted with the head teacher, community leadership and other residents to understand the challenges faced by pupils and families.
Community members explained that conditions become more difficult during the dry season, when the available water becomes dirtier. They also reported recurring sickness among children, although CDEO has not conducted medical testing to establish a direct cause.
The school’s sanitation situation also presents concerns for privacy, hygiene, accessibility and the dignity of pupils, particularly girls and children with disabilities.
CDEO has obtained a joint endorsement from the school and community leadership supporting the proposed intervention.
Problem statement
Pupils and staff at the Machogo community school do not have reliable access to a protected safe-water source, adequate gender-responsive sanitation or proper handwashing facilities.
Dependence on an unprotected stream exposes users to water-quality risks and requires pupils and community members to travel to collect water. Inadequate sanitation affects privacy, dignity, hygiene and school participation. Existing conditions may create greater difficulties for girls and persons with disabilities because suitable and accessible facilities are unavailable.
Without an integrated WASH intervention, the school will continue to face barriers to maintaining a safe, inclusive and healthy learning environment.
Objectives
- Provide the school with a reliable borehole fitted with a manual hand pump.
- Construct a durable six-cubicle sanitation facility.
- Provide three sanitation cubicles for girls and two for boys.
- Provide one accessible cubicle for persons with disabilities.
- Install handwashing facilities for pupils and staff.
- Promote proper hygiene, safe-water handling and responsible use of the facilities.
- Establish community-supported arrangements for operation, cleaning and maintenance.
- Improve privacy, dignity and accessibility within the school environment.
- Monitor construction quality, use of the facilities and verified project results.
Target beneficiaries
The direct beneficiaries will be the pupils, teachers and staff of the community school in Machogo Village.
The facilities may also provide indirect benefits to parents and members of the surrounding community through improved hygiene knowledge and community participation in protecting and maintaining the infrastructure.
The current verified school-enrolment figure and the number of persons with disabilities will be published after confirmation with the head teacher. CDEO will not publish estimated beneficiary numbers as confirmed results.
Planned activities
- Hydrogeological assessment and borehole siting
- Borehole drilling and water-point construction
- Pump installation and water-quality testing
- Construction of the six-cubicle sanitation facility
- Installation of accessible handwashing stations
- Hygiene education for pupils, staff and community representatives
- Formation or strengthening of a local WASH management committee
- Training on cleaning, minor maintenance and financial planning for repairs

Budget summary
The preliminary estimated cost of the Machogo School WASH Project is US$33,000, approximately NLe 775,500 at a planning exchange rate of US$1 to NLe 23.50. This includes technical preparation, borehole drilling and installation of a manual hand pump, construction of a six-cubicle inclusive sanitation facility, handwashing stations, hygiene education, transportation, technical supervision, monitoring and contingency. The final approved budget will be published after the hydrogeological assessment, contractor quotations and detailed bill of quantities have been completed.
Funding needs
CDEO is seeking US$33,000 to implement the complete Machogo School WASH Project. Partners may fund the full intervention or sponsor a specific component: technical preparation—US$1,500; borehole and manual hand pump—US$11,000; six-cubicle inclusive sanitation facility—US$12,000; handwashing facilities—US$1,350; hygiene and sustainability activities—US$1,550; logistics, monitoring and management—US$2,600; and contingency—US$3,000.
All figures are preliminary and will be revised using competitive quotations, an approved bill of quantities and the results of the hydrogeological assessment. Expenditure and verified implementation updates will be documented and reported transparently.
